Five dishes that are better with salt grated at the table

Why grate at the last second

Pre-ground salt dissolves before you notice it. Fresh-grated crystals stay dry, audible, and bright — especially on food that is already cooked and plated. These five dishes are where we reach for the block first.

1. Steak and lamb chops

Rest the meat, plate it, then grate salt in one slow pass. You season the surface you will bite, not the pan drippings.

2. Eggs at brunch

Scrambled eggs and soft omelettes love irregular crystals. Grate at the table so heat from the plate does not melt fine salt before you taste it.

3. Tomatoes and burrata

Slice tomatoes, dress lightly with oil, plate with burrata, then grate. Mineral salt keeps its crunch against juicy fruit.

4. Dark chocolate and caramel

A single pass over dark chocolate or salted caramel dessert sharpens sweetness without turning the plate saline. Start sparingly.

5. Green salads

Toss greens gently, plate, then grate. Leaves stay crisp and crystals stay on top where your teeth find them.
